Some of the mutt USE flags changed recently.  I seem to recall some elog/ewarn 
message on this.  Instead of USE=gpg and USE=smime, try USE=gpgme instead and 
then add:

'set crypt_use_gpgme=yes'

in your /$HOME/.muttrc.
