There's a lot of documentation at the Alsa site.

That said, let's look around. Please post back the output of

lspci
lsmod
cat /proc/asound/cards

Remove any /etc/asound.state file, run alsamixer again, and then run

alsactl store

Locate a wave file and try playing that from the command line. What happens

aplay file.wav
