I failed to guess what to do: no obvious way to start a new field, the example field wouldn't allow itself to be selected, and it is impossible to start typing somewhere in the middle (say, to reuse the "[*.]" part). But once you insert a new entry, you can edit it like any normal human being would assume. IOW, the behaviour of the example entry is not representative. Google aces display a nice grasp of the meaning of "example". Thanks Jorge
