efi/gpt aren't more buttoned up; just different. For example, for grub: bios + msdos label boot.img - embedded in mbr core.img - embedded in post-mbr gap bios + gpt label boot.img - embedded in mbr core.img - embedded in bios_boot partition efi + gpt label efi (pe/coff) executable on a fat partition
