There is a possible solution in my post. My writing style is a bit buckshot at times. Basically, kick cups out of the way and just use the hplip commands to set up the printer. Doing it that way has worked the last couple years for me. Not sure if it matters or not, I do it as root too. ;-) Dale :-) :-)
