Have you tried to unmerge all the emulation packages before updating the system, as advised by the news? I did it before the full update. As the result, my system updated/recompiled about 267 packages (that lasted about 6 hours on my computer) but I had no need to add any abi_x86_32 USE flags in my package.use, though I do have wine installed.
