not at all. you can indeed just create a new LV called "newroot" or something more sensible and copy /etc/portage and /var/lib/portage/world and the stage3 and then follow the handbook (mostly) the advantage to this is huge, especially if you want all the compiling to happen while you still have a working system. obviously you then need to create a grub / lilo menu that says "testing new empty root" with root=/dev/mapper/vg/newroot
