Yes, the problem is that the search engine list data (the gif and dat files) are in /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox/searchplugins, which is normally not writeable by a user. At first I used to open FF as root to add them, but during the 'update-every-day' syndrome a month or so back I got sick of that, so I just went into a file manager as root and changed the permissions on the directory to make it writeable by a user, and haven't had problems since. > and then they'd get overwritten everytime firefox was upgraded, so > I'd have to reinstall/uninstall the ones I wanted didn't want. Yes, that was the second annoyance; solved by copying the searchplugins folder to /root (where I knew it would never get accidentally overriden), and copying it back if an update purged the list. Since my search engine sort order is in my personal user.js, once the gif and dat files were available, they appeared and were sorted correctly (as my user.js is untouched by any upgrades). Doesn't seem to have happened lately, though--I just upgraded 1.0.6-r?? to -r7, and everything was fine. But since there's been an outstanding Mozilla bug about this, maybe it got fixed and I just didn't read the changelog. Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
