You have both installed, 1.13.4 is just the latest. Give eix a try, it will make your life better. In this case equery also works: $ equery l automake * Searching for automake ... [IP-] [ ] sys-devel/automake-1.11.6-r1:1.11 [IP-] [ ] sys-devel/automake-1.13.4:1.13
