Simply by booting without init=. although some packages have been built with USE="systemd" they still work when booting using openrc. Of course, systemd is still present on the system, even if the PID1 process is not running. Incidentally, I discovered today that Linux Mint Debian Edition uses classic init, but has systemd installed. All you need to switch over is add the init= kernel option. -- Neil Bothwick A.
