For the hell of it, I ran 'emerge -e sys-apps/dbus dev-libs/dbus-glib'
again. six hours and a reboot later and nothing has changed :(

I have re-emerged sys-apps/dbus dev-libs/dbus-glib
sys-auth/polkit-kde-agent
as recommended elsewhere but it didn't help.
