Recently I've gone over to using the FlashDisable extension for Firefox to only activate Flash *temporarily* when I really need it. Also, consider youtube-dl, which came recommended by a friend and has worked wonderfully for me for a variety of sites (youtube, vimeo, soundcloud, etc.).
