The default is a minimal x display with an xterm and that could be part of your problem. As someone posted earlier, if you are mixing a Gentoo and Sabyon Install, You will have issues. Nothing says you can't use the sabyon image to boot - then simply follow the Gentoo Install Guide as normal to get a working system and DO NOT MIX.
