Well I looked into "/sys/class/net" as mentioned by Alan. In there I see eth0/ eth1/ lo/ and sit0/. Not sure what too look for in (e.g. eth0/). /sys/class/net/eth0/ifindex says 3. Other files look ok, for example address (contains mac address if that has not changed...).
