You can also use this patch which adds support for modern (>=gcc-4.6) CPU options to the kernel: http://www.linuxforge.net/linux/kernel/kernel-30rc5-gcc46-0.patch -- you can get Intel Core i7 and Intel Core i7 AVX choices in your kernel.
