Well, I basically recreated this: http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/xfce-extra/xfce4-xfapplet-plugin/xfce4-xfapplet-plugin-0.1.0.ebuild?revision=1.10 and went to open a bug for it. The good news is, I wound up with basically the same ebuild: I only had an additional dependency on libxfce4util. The bad news is, it probably isn't going to work for much longer -- that's why it got removed. It does compile on my machine though.
