It sounds as though you are starting only X and not xfce.

This is my logon_cmd from /etc/slim.conf
login_cmd           exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax
--exit-with-session /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session >
~/.xsession-errors 2>&1

And this is my ~/.xinitrc

exec startxfce4

Everything is running great. If I am not mistaken that is all it will
take to get it running.
