There's gotta be an option for vsftp to give more verbose logs, right? Also, ask your customer for his logs. Back in the days when I was using windows any self-respecting graphical ftp client would have a little window showing the connecting status/log. That could really help.
Also, ask your customer to try login using the commandline ftp from XP. We'd at least like to know it is not a problem wit his client.
