You could also use the --files-from option

echo home var | rsync --files-from - [options] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/ $DEST

You could also put the directories in a file instead of including them on
the command line each time

echo -e "home\nvar" >foo
rsync --files-from foo [options] [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/ $DEST
