I ran into something weird like this a week or two ago. One of my file
systems went belly up. I ended up backing up what I could and starting
over. If you have portage on a separate partition then you may want to
give it a fresh start. It would be better than starting out fresh.
Just a thought. BTW, I was using reiserfs on the partition.
