Using "Ctrl + Alt + SysRq + key" by passes Xorg and gets handled by the kernel. I used the same key combo to fix my Xorg drivers the other day. Yes I know I should of read the elog. With the key combo you need to hit all 4 keys at the same time or it does not work.
