I rebooted and everything is working again. I was on pins and needles while waiting, but a backup went fine last night. util-linux still complains: >>> Preparing source in /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.18/work/util-linux-ng-2.18 ... * Applying util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff ... * Failed Patch: util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff ! * ( /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.18/work/util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff ) * * Include in your bugreport the contents of: * * /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.18/temp/util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff.out and that log says ***** util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff ***** ============================================== PATCH COMMAND: patch -p0 -g0 -E --no-backup-if-mismatch < '/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.18/work/util-linux-ng-2.17.1-20100308.diff' ============================================== can't find file to patch at input line 13 Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option? If it can't even find the file, I don't think replacing existing files from elsewhere will do any good. That also implies upstream will get things straightened out sooner or later anyway. -- ... _._. ._ ._. . _._. ._. ___ .__ ._. . .__. ._ .. ._.
