Let's start with xfce4 then because it's much smaller than gnome. What fails to build, and with what errors? I actually use gnome, so I could probably give you more help with that. I haven't seen any build failures on my ~amd64 machine lately, so there must be a fairly basic problem on your machine if you are seeing that many build failures. Some specific error messages would help, though.
