My guess is that you have something like the following in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file: Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "radeon" Option "UseFBDev" "On" <...> EndSection If so, you either need to set UseFBDev to Off, or build your kernel with the radeon frame-buffer driver into the kernel or as a module.
