Vim saves backups in *.sw?-files. Mutt's tempfiles are named /tmp/mutt-$HOSTNAME..., with ... being some numbers. So you should be able to recover the mail by looking for /tmp/mutt-*.sw? and then starting vim with the *original* filename (i.e. w/o the .sw?-Suffix).
