I don't know why it didn't mount a couple of times but it did on later reboots so for now I'm just going to chalk it up to electronic gremlins and hope it doesn't return. There is a similar new problem that may be related to this one that I'm going to ask for help in a thread later this morning. Practically it's not going to be removed since it's being used for MythTV data storage. However when I add another 1394 drive it may be recognized as sdb or sdc so mounting my device name (/dev/sdX#) doesn't work.
