Same here: I can swap the bay mounted cdrw with a floppy module for a short time, and as long as I swap it back before doing a software suspend all is fine. Any other combination (including leaving it out for extended periods) ensures a painful crash at inopportune moments. As well, my i82k has a stupidly designed catch on the bay that often releases when picking the machine up: leaving the device partially plugged in. Again, a crash often results. Hotplugging may help here.
