MythTV is a very useful package for recording TV, and pausing on demand TV (you never know when you'll get that annoying phonecall while watching your favourite program)
It needs mySQL to store all its data (TV Listings and whatnot) - it downloads listings from a selection of sites using xmltv and stores them in the database along with other info (channels / what to record etc). Another advantage to myth is you can have the backend on one box, and watch from another over a network. Aswell as mythtv, there is an alternative called Freevo (http://freevo.sourceforge.net/) - I haven't tried this, but from what I gather its very similar to mythtv.
