Just wanted to pass on that nameif was the solution to my NIC device swapping issues. I had mentioned that it kept setfaulting, though it was indeed doing its job.
I found a bugreport, and it turns out that if the config file you pass nameif has more than 3 lines, it segfaults. This is fixed in net-tools-1.60-r11. Nice catch, devs. And thanks to those who helped me, it's always great to learn something new. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
