i don't use xmms, but i do use xfce4, and had this issue. the problem is that you are most likely using alsa-lib-1.0.8. there is a bug, but i forget the number. suggested in it were upgrading to the ~arch masked 1.0.9, or downgrading to 1.0.7. i downgraded to 1.0.7 and have no more problems with it. you can add these lines to /etc/portage/package.mask >media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.7 >media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.7 hope it helps -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
