Please be aware that there's a rat's nest to be disentangled here. protobuf is tightly coupled with dev-cpp/abseil-cpp and we really need a virtual or similar because abseil-cpp linkage now leaks into protobuf consumers. Both have unstable ABI. See https://bugs.gentoo.org/912819#c4. thanks, sam
