More or less properly depending on the font and its format. More detailed answer: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Fonts xetex & luatex can use freetype/fontconfig; others usually rely on conversion to tex native format (pk+tfm), automatically I am not sure if the font doesnt come from the texmf tree Alexis.
