Not sure what you mean with very early, you don't really have control
over this anyway; the earliest point at which you can reliably do this
is to turning init itself into a wrapper.

That's if externally you turn it into a symlink, not with a wrapper.

And EFI? This sounds a bit of an overkill. What's wrong with a wrapper?
