X11 team considered doing exactly that once after the nouveau API break in libdrm-2.4.33, splitting libdrm_nouveau-2.4.32 into its own separate package and renaming/modifying libdrm_nouveau.pc to make it installable in parallel to more recent libdrm[video_cards_nouveau] (bug 409593 comment 30).
