net-dns/avahi[mdnsresponder-compat] provides /usr/lib*/libdns_sd.* as a wrapper around its own libraries, so it should Just Work(tm). Also, looking at the version of samba I have installed on my system, it doesn't appear to be linked against libdns_sd.so at all.
