Name or versioning rules are things like allowing new suffixes or altering the restrictions upon formatting. Currently, package managers assume that they can handle anything named pkg-$anything.ebuild, and $anything has to be a valid version spec by the current rules. Version rules have changed at least twice in the past, and it's been messy every time. 55 allows version changes to be done safely (although not carelessly...). -- Ciaran McCreesh
