Do you refer to this?
Checks for new news messages should be displayed:

    * After an emerge sync
    * After an emerge --pretend
    * Before an emerge <target> (which may also include a red warning
message)

How can there be new messages with emerge --pretend if emerge --sync is
the only way to get them? Should be saying unread messages and it would
be clear to me.
