I do want to note, though, that Brian is working on pkgcore outside of Gentoo, much like how Paludis is being done. Now, at some point in the future, we might all decide that pkgcore (or paludis, or something else, entirely) would be a better official package manager than portage. So we switch. I think this model for "competing projects" works out quite well.
