There are a fair number of packages with heavy test dependencies which aren't usually installed. Typical examples of things that need to be pulled in are unit test frameworks (eg cppunit), extra archive formats (eg zip support) and extra debug-related libraries. Personally I prefer the DEPEND="features_test? ( blah )" approach.
