Updated based upon the feedback, thanks guys. If someone who's relatively clueless about autotools could give it a read and let me know what is and isn't clear I'd appreciate it. There're still lots of things that could be improved, of course, but I reckon it's probably more helpful if I start tidying up other areas some more rather than spending huge amounts of time getting that one page perfect.
