Hi all!

I would like to bring a discussion about potential addition of the xdigest
project [1] into the Apache Software Foundation though the incubator
program.

In a few words, it's a simple library that provides implementations of the
majority of cryptographic digest algorithms (SHA1, SHA2, MD5, etc.) with a
focus on performance. Currently the implementations are derived from OpenSSL.
This project originates from the work I've been doing in Subversion towards
optimising checksums there.

I believe that xdigest will find its perfect life under ASF. It meets many
ideas that the foundation might be looking for. It greatly integrates into the
Apache project collection, i.e. the nature of this project is related to other
projects in the ASF (like Subversion). I think it's generally good for the
ecosystem.

The project itself is structured as a small library that has a straightforward
vision of "doing one thing and doing it well" - compute fast checksums.

However, there is one thing which is quite concerning; there is almost no/a
little community around that this project could potentially bring. While the
incubator's and Apache's documentations clearly state that it looks for a
community. On the other hand, I believe that the community could be formed
during incubation as well.

I would really love to hear some opinions about this whole idea. Especially, if
this fine when a podling begins its journey with essentially one person in the
beginning and builds the community later?
