Hi Mike, Excellent question and one which I asked myself to justify before stepping up as Champion on this effort.
Basically, having spoken with the existing community, SDAP brings together a suite of software tools which facilitates and defines a clear roadmap for integration in terms of academic interests, software engineering and technology infusion. A lot of work has already been done here by Thomas Huang and colleagues across the member institutions mentioned in the proposal. Additionally, a great deal of progress has been made here as well. SDAP and the community platform provided by bringing this under the SDAP umbrella at Apache furthers this goal with the key aim of building community similar to what Hadoop has done with HDFS, MapReduce, YARN, etc. under the Hadoop umbrella. You will also see mention of a project named OceanWorks, Thomas is the Principal Investigator of this project. Essentially OceanWorks aims to enable science over the platform provided by SDAP in an operational context. The aim of SDAP is however to harmonize the underlying technologies such that they can be used more generically across the scientific community for science outside of Oceanography. We aim to do this at Apache. I hope this makes sense, it does to me.
