The Airavata podling was proposed to incubator to inherit and further develop
software to register, compose, manage, execute, and monitor small to large
scale command line applications and workflows on computational resources
ranging from local clusters to national grids and computing clouds.
Airavata was initially chosen by voting among initial committers. The proposer
intended that Airavata is a multi-tasked elephant and is positioned at the
gateway to heaven, hence it made sense to name it for software which will build
gateways to clouds and grids.
