In my opinion, a reasonable compromise would be to set it as a project
goal to reduce corporate dependency on the committers list.

I'm really confused where this is coming from. The goal of incubation is to generate sufficient diversity in contributions to ensure that the community is viable even with the departure of a number of active parties.

This proposal is coming *into* the incubator with more diversity than is typically required to graduate (not that I'm suggesting there are shortcuts for incubation here).

Why on earth is having this diversity being seen as a problem?

Nobody has explained that to me yet and unless someone does so I, as a mentor, am going to ask the champion to call the vote.

I would take that so far as to treat it as a bug, place an issue in
JIRA to that effect, and schedule a date/version for the issue to be
resolved. This will remind everyone to remain focused on attracting a
diverse set of independent individuals, without corporate attachment,
as contributors and eventually as committers.

That said, they are more likely to attract that community as an Apache
Incubator Podling. I would make resolution of the JIRA issue a
blocking task to graduation however. Resolving these kinds of issues
is sort of the point of the Incubator, correct?

Thanks,
Troy

I'm looking forward to a vote on this proposal.

I've read the thread and I think it's good to know **up front** that there
are going to be corporate contributions, not just from one corporation.

I would like to propose the Apache Rave project to the Incubator PMC.
Our draft proposal is appended to the end of this email and is available
at:

  http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/RaveProposal

The Apache Rave project proposal is a joined effort of Hippo, the MITRE
Corporation, the Open Gateway Computing Environments project (OGCE), the
SURFnet SURFConext Portal project, OSS Watch, and several other individuals.

== Abstract ==

Apache Rave is A new WEb And SOcial Mashup Engine. It will provide an
out-of- the-box as well as an extendible lightweight Java platform to host,
serve and aggregate (Open)Social Gadgets and services through a highly
customizable and Web 2.0 friendly front-end. Rave is targeted as engine for
internet and intranet portals and as building block to provide context-aware
personalization and collaboration features for multi-site/multi-channel
(mobile) oriented and content driven websites and (social) network oriented
services and platforms. For the OpenSocial container and services the (Java)
Apache Shindig will be integrated. At a later stage further generalization
is envisioned to also transparently support W3C Widgets using Apache Wookie.
