The only reason I left Champion (or whatever we want to call it) was that the role does play a part in the start up of incubation, and is not necessarily the Mentor. E.g. XMLBeans, where Steven Noels did most of the work to help the candidate through the initial process and then Ted took on the role of Shepherd. (Note that this doens't mean the Champion ducks out - Steve is still around in XMLBeans.) There was a thread some time back from memory on this - where we came to the conclusion that the kind of person that makes a great Champion is not necessarily the person who makes a great mentor, so we agreed to keep the two separate - gives some flexibility.
