Would be great to have you involved. If you would like to for the time being we can leverage the sourceforge infrastructure. Let me know if there's any particular aspect you want to work on. You would probably be most interested in the ldapd.server.backend source subtree. Take a look at the concept of a backend and the default implementations which use a hand woven database that uses JDBM B+Trees for indices. Wes McKean has some ideas about refactoring some of this stuff so it can be used for other things in the future ;-). I want to think about it but I really have to focus on other things like implementing alias dereferencing within search and other LDAP specific functionality. Feel free to join the mailing list and start getting involved. I knew that involvement with Apache would help refine the community bringing eager people like yourself to the round table.
