If you use a unmodified m5/m5.c binary the problem doesn't occur? What changes 
did you make to the binary, I'd guess that changed something.  The other thing 
to check is that the simulator has permission to read the file you put on the 
command line. You also might want to try an absolute path instead of a relative 
one.
