Richard, there are a few different ways of doing this. My favorite is to use the gattrib program. I lay out my schematic without assigning footprints, and then open the schematic in gattrib and assign them in one go. gattrib has a spreadsheet style layout so I can quickly and easily assign footprints, change values etc. gattrib is included in most distributions of gEDA.
