The gdal package in Debian is not backported because that requires rebuilding 
its reps as well, it's fine as long as the default GCC in Debian unstable is 
supported.

That same gdal package is backported for OSGeo-Live and UbuntuGIS, so they need 
support for at least the latest Ubuntu LTS which OSGeo-Live is based on, and 
the last two Ubuntu LTS releases for which the UbuntuGIS PPA provides packages.
