yes you are demanding a bit too much to the simple HTTP driver (the one that kicks in with http:// without /vsicurl/ prefixing). It just dowloads the content pointed by the URL , put in in a /vsimem/ file and then let other drivers try to recognize that. The logic to query side car files can't work there because the PNG driver will try to open /vsimem/something.png.aux.xml .
